Deckhand Orientation Program

This course includes the Basic Safety Training Elements required by STCW as well as an introduction to operations on board ship.  Basic Safety topics include basic firefighting (lecture and practical); elementary first aid; CPR/AED; personal safety and social responsibility; and personal survival.  Additional topics covered are current drug and alcohol policy; vessel safety orientation; vessel construction, design, and deck operations; marlinspike seamanship; deckhand responsibilities; maritime security; oil transfer procedures and pollution prevention; duties and qualifications of a proper lookout and watch-stander; and emergency procedures orientation.  This course satisfies the mandatory minimum U.S.  Coast Guard requirements as per 46 CFR part 10.205 (1) for seafarers employed or engaged in any capacity onboard a ship as well as requirements found in Section A-VI/1 set out in Table A-VUI-1 of the STCW '95 Code.  This course also satisfies the Basic Firefighting training requirements of 46 CFR 10.205 (g) and 10.401 (g)(1) for a license and requirements of 46 CFR 13.201 (e), 13.301 (e), 13.401 (d), and 13.501 (e) for any tankerman endorsement.
