CAPT John E. Hanus, USMS
Director
CAPT Hanus is a 1988 graduate of the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) at Kings Point, New York. He received his USNR commission upon graduation and is currently an active drilling reservist with The Office of Naval Intelligence.
CAPT Hanus has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Marine Engineering and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Marine Transportation. He holds dual USCG licenses as third mate and second assistant engineer - unlimited. He also holds a limited USCG Chief Engineer’s license and a limited sail license. CAPT Hanus has served as mate and marine engineer aboard several American flag vessels engaged in deep sea trade.
From 1992 to 1994, CAPT Hanus served as an adjunct professor at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and as an instructor in the Academy’s Continuing Education program. In 1994, CAPT Hanus was appointed as Associate Director of the Global Maritime and Transportation School at the United States Merchant Marine Academy.
After the attacks on September 11th, CAPT Hanus was mobilized by the Navy to active duty for one year in Washington D.C..
On August 1, 2005, CAPT Hanus was appointed as Director of the Global Maritime and Transportation School. He was also promoted to the rank of Captain in the United States Maritime Service on August 1, 2005 by Academy’s superintendent, VADM Joseph Stewart.
