GMATS is partnered with Old Dominion University Business Gateway to present training for the Professional Marine Engineer. Together ODU and GMATS will provide comprehensive courses available to both Maritime Companies and the Individual Mariner.

This course focuses on management level processes employed in operating a modern seagoing vessel. Management of manpower, spare parts, consumable materials, management labor relations, documentation, cost accounting, and regulatory compliance are covered.

Learn fuel management and its impact upon ship owners and the maritime industry. The dramatic increase in the cost of marine fuels has propelled this aspect to the forefront of vessel operations. The course is designed to address the problems of operating with today's fuels. The course will cover the current fuel specifications, how to deal with fuels of varying quality, and how to establish a claim if the fuel is not within specifications.

This one week course covers topics such as introduction to the diesel and steam shipboard power plants, gas turbines, pumps/packing and strainers, valves, naval architecture, machine shop - welding materials and processes, marine refrigeration and HVAC systems, electrical, and rigging. Originally a course designed for the Engineering Duty Officer community. The ship engineering orientation course provides a basic overview of topics pertaining to ship operation, giving the student an understanding of basic ship operations and hands-on experience in specific areas.

This course brings to the marine engineer both the fundamentals and modern practices in the field of marine diesel engineering. Upon completion, students will be able to identify two and four stroke engines. Each student will be able to identify and understand the function of all stationary and moving components of a diesel engine. The curriculum includes an introduction to marine diesel engines, engine component functions, construction, operation, maintenance, repair and troubleshooting. Students will obtain a working knowledge of the essential engine systems and all auxiliary systems normally found on a diesel engine.
